SOHAM CEMETERY – REGULATION AND TABLE OF FEES
Effective as of 1st April 2016
The fees, payments and sums set out below apply where the person to be interred in or in respect of whom the right is granted is or immediately before his/her death was, an inhabitant or parishioner (resident) of the parish of Soham, or in the case of a stillborn child where the parents (or one of them) are or at the time of death were, such inhabitants or parishioners. A person who had been domicile in Soham immediately prior to moving to a nursing/residential home (but not into the care of a relative) shall be considered as being a resident for the purposes of fees/charges.
Interment fees for non-residents will in all cases be DOUBLED.
Where an Exclusive Rights of Burial for a burial or cremation space exists Soham Town Council can only authorise their opening with the permission from the owner or to inter the owner. In all other cases ownership must be transferred to someone who can legally prove they are entitled to receive these ownership rights. Whilst the Town Council will offer assistance in establishing the means of transfer, responsibility remains with the funeral Director/arranger to have clarified this matter before booking a slot for burial purposes.
Whilst certain areas of the old cemetery site(s) has been consecrated STC as a burial authority operates, with the exception of ascertaining residential status, a non-discretionary, non-denominational and multi faith burial grounds.
Soham Town Council (STC) operates a lawned cemetery policy and does not permit the planting of shrubs/bushes on grave spaces.
STC burial fees and charges exclude with the exception of interments within the Garden of Remembrance, grave digging, ground preparation or back fill services.
Unless otherwise agreed no interments shall take place outside normal cemetery opening hours (8am-4pm). Burials undertaken at weekends on statutory, public or bank holidays attract further charges. Interments before 10am or after 2.00pm weekdays may attract an additional charge of £30.00
Where there is no Exclusive Right of Burial-burials graves will be considered as being ‘unpurchased’ and the Council may inter other unrelated person(s). Please note that no memorials will be permitted on un-purchased grave spaces and may only be turfed flat with the surrounding ground level.
Part 1 – Interments
Interment of the body of a still born child or a child whose age at the time of death did not exceed one month. £0.00
Interment of child (1 month -16 years) £125
Interment of any other person: Single depth up to 5’6” £250 / Double depth over 5’6” £250
Public health burials (District Council/Funeral Director arranged) £75
Interment of cremated remains in grave space/Garden of Remembrance in respect of which an exclusive right of burial has been granted- depth up to 1’6” £115. Depth over 1’6” £125.
Part 2 – Exclusive Rights of Burial
Exclusive right of burial for a period not exceeding 99 years in first instance of cremated remains in an earthen grave 2 feet x 2 feet. £120
Part 3 – Memorials
Temporary floral tributes will be removed after a respectful period of time (usually 3 months) from graves to facilitate the normal grounds maintenance operations.Soham Town Council recognises that all memorial masons wishing to erect memorials need to be BRAMM (British Register of Accredited Memorial Masons) accredited and in possession of a BRAMM fixer licence. To assist the relevant person(s) it is assumed that the funeral arranger will pass this information. Memorials that are not erected by BRAMM qualified installers shall be assessed by STC Cemetery and Allotment Committee in accordance with its health and safety policies-those that do not comply will be removed without further notice. Memorials that are not erected by BRAMM qualified installers shall still be subject to approval and relevant fee.
Materials – Memorials shall only be of stone, granite or marble (no wood allowed). Colours of memorials should be muted and consistent with the respectful and sensitive nature of the environment in which they are to be placed.Memorials will not be permitted on children’s’ grave unless the appropriate fees have been paid.
Memorial benches/benching in general – Soham Town Council does not allow benches to be placed at gravesides without prior written permission being obtained from the council/committee. Benching will not be allowed at individual graves where other memorials (temporary or permanent) have been installed. Any council-authorised benches installed will need to comply with BRAMM and safety regulations. For the right to erect or place on a grave in respect which a right of exclusive burial has been granted:-

Soham Town Council reserves the right to make alterations to these charges at any time consistent with the Local Government Act 1972 and the Local Authorities Cemetery Order 1977. All cemetery fees will be subject to these charges and any terms and conditions that may be in force at the time
