Have your say on the Police and Crime Commissioner’s proposed precept increase

As Police and Crime Commissioner, it’s my job to set the budget for the Constabulary.

For the 2022/23 financial year, as with others, it is important to clarify that police funding comes from two main sources: 56% from central government (excluding specific grants) and the remainder from the policing part of council tax.

As I begin to set the budget, I am keen to understand your views on crime and policing through the below short, online survey which I urge you to complete.

I know from the many conversations I have had with people across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough that many of you value the policing service you receive.

I also recognise, however, that household costs are rising across the board. Unfortunately. it is no different for policing. Inflation pressures and national insurance increases mean that there are considerable increasing costs for policing which must be met to enable the Constabulary to continue to provide a good service.

Whilst the additional 82 officers recruited through the government’s national ‘Uplift’ programme will bring officer numbers in the county to record levels – 1,714 by March 2023, these officers (and those who have recently joined) need support, supervision and training before they are fully up to speed and working within our communities.

My proposed increase of £10 per year (based on a Band D property) will enable the Chief Constable to invest in a number of areas which are detailed here.

Please take a few minutes to complete my survey – your views will help inform my final decision on how much to raise the policing part of council tax.
